"The Screwtape Letters" Satirical Book Review

Tumblr media

"The Screwtape Letters" comes from C.S.Lewis, the author most well-known for bringing us "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. This is a really funny book about the absurdities of human nature and how easily people can be manipulated into becoming self-absorbed dingbats. The book consists of a series of letters between a high ranking demon in Hell named Screwtape and his young nephew Wormwood. Inexperienced Wormwood is trying to tempt a young man into turning away from the Christian God and becoming a rather miserable human being. We only ever hear the responses from Screwtape to his nephews many questions about how to lead his "patient" into sin, Screwtape often responds in frustration, all but calling his nephew a "noob". Screwtape then goes on to explain human behavior and psychology as it pertains to many specific situations that many of us go through in our lives, primarily from the perspective of somebody who looks down on these traits and who only wishes to use them to control and trick people into bad behavior.

I have to admit I've always found the idea that demons have nothing better to do with their time than to try to cause people to become atheists or evil to be rather funny, but I guess to Christians it makes sense. I found this work to be extremely entertaining and I can only wonder after reading this book why "The Chronicles of Narnia" were so lacking in humor. C.S. Lewis has demonstrated in "The Screwtape Letters" that he can be a really funny guy. Most of the reviews you will find of this book are written by Christians but you don't have to be a Christian to enjoy the work, it stands on its own merit and I would highly recommend it.- Zwahk Muchoney (https://www.cslewis.com)

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) by Jerome K. Jerome

I had read this book for the first time in middle school I think, I did not remember a single think about it. I found an audiobook online, and I decided to read it again. It was as funny as I remembered.

This book was first published in 1889. It's the story of three friends Jerome, Harris and George who travel on a boat on the river Thames. With them there is also the dog Montmorency. That's it, that is the plot, but the story is enriched with anecdotes, and it's hilarious. It's a very lighthearted read, and honestly it was exactly what I needed at the moment. The narration is really funny, and I feel like it could be a good read when you aren't really up for a challenging book. There's not much else to say, it's a really approachable classic, and it'a definetly worth a read.

I just finished the Vicar Man by @ameliahcrowley and I absolutely loved it! If any of you are in the market for an affecionate take-down of folk horror, complete with dark rituals, failing harvests, and plenty of jokes, I cannot recommend this anti-romance highly enough!

Alberigo Di Domacia by Morgoroth

I don't even know where to start with this book. A dear friend of mine decided to randomly get this for me, and now I understand why he liked this book so much.

This little book is one of the most hilarious things I have ever read, and it was written amazingly. It mocks classic epic poems of Italian literature, so it's written in poem form, and it only get better from there. It's a collection of the adventures of Alberigo, a very unlucky crusader, who get tangled up in all sorts of messes. He really wants to reach the Holy Land, but instead he ends up travelling Europe, and nothing goes right. Very simple premise, as I said it's hilarious, so if you happen to speak Italian do read this book because you'll laugh a lot. It was absolutely the lighthearted thing I needed at the moment. I will surely end up looking more into the author.
